TROTS AT HUTT PARK

THE CUP TRIAL MEETING

BAD LUCK WITH WEATHER

An unfortunate change of weather during the forenoon brought a wet afternoon for the Wellington-Trotting- Olub's Cup Trial Meeting at Hutt Park on Saturday, | Bnd although the rain cleared off towards the close of. the day's sport, it spoiled what otherwise might have been a most successful meeting. It was the first wet day the club has experienced for a long time, but i 6 luckily was not cold. The. track soon became greasy with, the rain, but it remained hard underneath, and times for the racing were good. The attendance was mainly at or on its way to the course before the break came, so it! was much better than might have been expected under the conditions that prevailed. The totalisator turnover amounted to £12,145 10s (£6328 win, £5817 10s place), compared with £14,900 15s under the old Bystem last year, a decrease of £2755 58; which was partly accounted for by the last race's being reduced- to only four runners. INJURY TO FAVOURITE. The favourite for the Petone Handicap, Norman Fox, reared and fell just prior to the start and injured a fetlock. He tried to trot when the barriers were_ released,'but was so lame that J. J. Kennerley pulled him up. ■\Vhen the race had been in progress three furlongs. Nelson's Prince, Real Boy, Gyrate, and Chiming Wrack were racing eight lengths clear of Raclaim, Resound, Blue ahd Gold, and Amonos. With a round to go, Real Boy headed Nelson's Prince, with Gyrate and Chiming Wrack in close attendance. Approaching the mile post - Nelson's Prince dropped v baek and Real Boy went on, with Gyrate and Chiming Wrack following him closely. There was no change until the straight was reached, where Gyrate challenged' Real Boy, and. after a sharp tussle,- beat him home by a length. Chiming Wrack was six lengths further away third, then at an interval of five lengths came Amonos. :Gyrate is trained at Oamaru by J. Henderson, and is a particularly well-bred gelding, being by Nelson Bingeu from Glade.1 He was driven by M. B, Edwards. AFTER NARROW ESCAPE. After nai'rowly avoiding a disaster three furlongs from home in the Novice Handicap, Clem Dawe came on to win rather comfortably by two lengths from Flintlock, who .was driven a patient race for ten furlongs. At the entrance to the straight Flintlock threatened to catch Clem Dawe, but the latter finished too well for his opponent, who was hard driven over the last furlong. Match King was in the lead when he made a bad break at the nine furlongs post. Attorney left his feet at the end of two furlongs. Atralette declined to begin smoothly, and Solario found the distance too far for him. DEAD HEAT HOISTED. The October Handicap provided a sparkling finish between Purser, Kaydus, and JJoddy, th,e three pacers being all in as they crossed the judge, who announced Raydus and Purser- for first place, and Roddy-a .bare neck away in third place. ■When the .field was sent on its journey Checkers put in a tangle, and lost two lengths: Major Lind began quickly and led for three furlongs, where'Raydus weut tothe'front, with Major'Lihd, Roddy1; Purser, Bracken, and Checkers racing in close order. There was no change .as they passed the mile post in 2min 22 4-ssec, and the positions were the same as they raced to the mile and a half station in 3min SOsec, At that stage of the contest Purser, Roddy, and Raydus manoeuvred for positions. Racing round the far bend Roddy was in the lead, with Purser, Raydus, and Major Lind in close attendance. Once in line for home Purser and Raydus tackled Roddy, and after an all-in finish the judge was unable to separate Raydus and Purser, who finished a neck in front of. Roddy. The last half-mile was covered in linin 5 4-ssec. UNEXPECTED "LEG" WINS. Royal Silk slipped his field two and a half furlongs from home and, pacing the last two furlongs in 31 -l-Ssee, he won the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap in convincing style from Mountain Dell, Kewpie's Guy, and Red Shadow, who were •hard driven all down the straight. Royal Silk gave a similar performance at Oamaru in October of last year, when he strolled home in a ten-furlongs race from Harold Logan, his brilliant effort inspiring many to regard him as difficult to beat_in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, for which he started favourite and finished down the course. He is now trained by L. F. Berkett, at Hope, and he was coupled on the totalisators with Red Shadow, who was practically solely responsible for. the bracket's solid favouritism. . , When' the field was set in motion Brent Xolock made a break, and Mountain Dell led out, with Kewpie's Guy, Logan's Pride, Royal Silk, Wrackler, Red Shadow, and Glenrossie racing in that order. The iirst two furlongs were negotiated in 36secv Racing through the straight Mountain Dell and Kewpie's Guy were together, with' Logan's Pride and Royal Silk together .-just behind them, and Red Shadow and Wrackler well placed. Approaching the six furlongs, which was reached in lmin 44sec, Royal Silk and Red Shadow improved their positions. Going to the far bend Royal Silk dashed to the front and was three lengths clear of Mountain Dell and Kewpie's Guy as he passed the mile post in 2min 15 3-ssec. Finishing, stoutly, Royal Silk never looked like being .beaten. Mountain Dell responded to a hard drive, as did Kewpie's Guy, only a jieck separating this pair two* lengths behind the winner. Red Shadow also finished well, and Glenrossie was, moving along nicely behind him at the end. AUCKLANDER'S SUCCESS. The Auckland-owned and trained pacer Worthy Light won the Borough Handicap with his driver sitting still. The margin at the winning post was a length and a half. He followed Cracker for nine and a half furlongs, where he took charge. He was followed into the straight by Marie Celeste and General Wrack, who finished well under pressure, but never looked like, catching the winner. General Wrack made a skip at the start and was back in fifth place at the end of two furlougs to go. He moved up with a round to go, but over the last three furlongs Worthy Light was. too good for him. Marie 'Celeste steadily made up-her handi(:s.p and iwas-second into the straight, but near.the finish a .slight weakening found her losing second money narrowly. The winner is a fast-improving four-year-old chestnut gelding by Worthy Bond from Illumination, and he is trained by F. J. Smith at Auckland. He won the last of the only three starts he had last seasop, and this season he has wo.n atall three appearances. EASY TROT VICTORY. Real Boy won the President's Handicap by six lengths, after losing four lengths by making a break when he had travelled only a furlong. He finished second to Gyrate in the Petone Handicap, decided earlier in the day. He has improved considerably under J. Davidson _at New Brighton, and 'promises to win again. Chiming Wrack drew clear of her field at the end of a furlong, but she tired badly at the end of a mile and a half. At this stage of the contest Real Boy, was trotting solidly eight lengths. in front of Amonos, with the remainder of the field tired and strung out. Amonos made a valiant effort to catch Real Boy in the straight, but could make no impression on him.

Derby*. Thorpe and Bnclaim broke badly flnring rtho race -aud dropped, right-back. l\lost of-ihe others either also made mistakee or found the two-mile- journey too far for them,'.

NEARLY THROWN AWAY. After entering the straight with a lead of four lengths from Solario, Lord Wrack, who had been in front all the way, appeared a certain winner of the Short Handicap, but over the last furlong, on being eased off, he stopped more quickly than anticipated and Atralette and Blandford -swooped down upon him, just failing by a short half-head and a neck respectively to take the race oil' him. The winner made it an end-to-end success. He is a stylish pacer by Wrack from Noiseless, and he is a pupil of L. O. Thomas's stable. The win was popular with the public. Atralette -was placed behind the first division and1 began well. She was hemmed in going along the back straight, and did hot v get' clear until two furlongs from home. From there she finished very fast. Blandford, after finding some trouble in holding a forward position, also came on well over the closing stages. The others were well beaten. POOR RACE FOR FINALE. After waiting on the leader, Wild Guy, until the straight was reached, Craganour put iv his claim and won the four-horse Electric Handicap by half a length, with his driver holding the whip in the air. Checkers was first away, but Craganour headed him before a furlong was disposed of. Then approaching the two-furlong disc Wild Guy went to the front and led past the stand, with Craganour, Checkers, and Gang Awa' following at short intervals in that order. There was no change until the straight was reached, where Craganour went on to win in the manner stated. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
