A NORWEGIAN HERO

Tho thousandth anniversary of the death of King Harald the Fairhaired was celebrated at tho small city of Haugesund, in. south-westeru Norway. The Viking King was the first monarch that succeeded in uniting the separated small Norse kingdoms under ono rule in the year 782, and one thousand years later there is a magnificent monument in his honour on tbo spot where the first ruler of Norway won the final decisivo victory over his opponents, At 'tho foot of- this monument the services commemorating tho death day of King Harald were held in tho presence of his successor on the Norwegian Throne, King Haakon VII. Vast crowds were assembled around the monument when King Haakon arrived wearing the uniform of an admiral of the Norwegian navy. His popularity became apparent when the musicians played "God Save tho King," stopping at tho end of the first vctsc, and the public insisted on singing the whole song, continuing without tho accompaniment of the orchestra.
