ROAD CYCLING

j LEAGUE CENTRE'S RACE

liain and a heavy northerly wind made conditions unpleasant for the 25 miles road race held on Saturday afternoon by the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand League of Amateur Wheelmen 'from | the Petone Rowing Club's building to Quinu's Post and back. The race was won by R. Dutton, off the smiu mark, and fastest time was1 made by W. Lusty (scr). : Because of the wind and the rain the outward journey was especially hard, particularly for the. scratch men, who were conceding starts up to nine minutes. The limit men, Taylor and Thomson, who were the first to turn - for home, appeared to be holding their handicap'very well. On the homeward journey, however, Kiug and Dutton set a very fast pace, and overhauled the leaders at .Lower ■ Hutt. Dutton, pedalling very strongly, made a break about a mile from home, and finished 30 yards ahead of R. Taylor, who had worked well to keep the back-markers away. The placings were as follows: — R. Button (omin), 69min 55sec 1 R. Taylor (Omin), 74min '2sec "2 M. Thomson (Omin), 74min 56 2-sscc . :? B. King (omin), 72min 2sec i .Fastest times: —W. Lasky (scr), 6Smin 3 2-osee; J. Boulton (scr), GSmiu 3 3-ssec. Messrs. Couchman and Lacey acted as /turning-point officials. Before moving off, the competitors were addressed by the chairman of the centre, Mr. A. A. Nattrass, who w-ished the riders the .best of luc.k, and urged on. them the necessity of keeping the sport clean, and riding, to the. best1 traditions of cycling, and to be sporting in all their actions.
