NEW NAVAL SLOOPS
i No definite advice has yet been received at the Devonport naval base ■whew ! the two Imperial sloops, fI.M.S. Veronica, commanded by Captain W. L. Jackson, and H.M.S. Laburnum, commanded by Commander A. H. Maxwell Hyslop, are to be relieved by new vessels from England (reports the "Herald")- The Veronica is to be replaced early next year and the Laburnum early in 1935. The Veronica's programme is at present definite only to January 31. She will leave Auckland on her southern cruise on November 13, and /will return at the end of January. It is expected that her final departure from the New Zealand station will take place a month or two later. She is a coalburning sloop, and will probably mako the journey to Englaud in easy stages. Captain Jackson, who took over, the command of the Veronica last year, will take the sloop back to England. The Veronica will be relieved by JH.M.S. Loith, one of the latest oilburning sloops, which was launched on j September 9. She is.expected to arrive at Auckland towards the middle of next year. The' Laburnum, will be replaced early in 1935 by H.M:S. Wellington, which is .at present building- at Devonport, England. ■": ..' ._ The Imperial sloops are stationed ill New Zealand at "no'cost.to the New Zealand taxpayer,/ They ;are sent out and..maintained, entirely by the Admiralty. . .'.■"■ ... \ : . ■
