CANTERBURY CENTRE
OPPOSED TO LEAGUE
The Canterbury Cycling Centre, at its annual meeting last week, decided that it would not take part in any conference with the League of New Zealand Amateur Wheelmen, the newly-formed body not connected with the centre or with the New Zealand Cycling Council. In the Canterbury centre's report it was stated that the first season in which amateur cycling had been held solely under the control of cyclists had proved a remarkably successful one. A great deal of work had been done to strengthen the position of cycling in Canterbury, and, starting with a few cyclists in the previous road season, the centre had progressed until it had a really strong body of competitors of an excellent type. At the beginning of the 1932 road season the centre had had to suspeud the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club, but on the application of the club the suspension was lifted just before the track season. The centre, however, had been compelled to suspend the club during the last road season. Another disquieting feature had been the formation of the New Zealand League of Amateur Wheelmen, but it had not giveiv the centre any uneasiness. All the clubs had strengthened their membership, aiwLthe centre would have more than 100 riders competing for it during the coming season, which, it was anticipated, would be an unbounded, success with large entries at all meetings.
