SCHOLARS' DEBATE

last Friday afternoon the second annual debate between Hutt Valley High School and Kongotai College was held at Eongotai. The principal of the college, Mr. P. Martyn Benner, presided. The principal of' Hutt Valley High School, Mr. H. P. Kidson. was also present. The motion "that the emergence of women from the home has been prejudicial to the best interests of the race" was supported by the Eongotai team, which consisted of L. Eose, T. Hinde, and G. S. Eichards. The Hutt Valley team, consisting of Dorothy, Milne, J. M. Eobertson, and N. E. Staee, opposed the motion.

At the conclusion of a spirited and entertaining debate, the judge, Dr. J. W. Manllwraith, congratulated both schools upon the high-class performance staged by the debaters. Ho said that the arguments on both sides were sound and cogent, the facts wero well marshalled* and the conclusions wero ably reached. In giving his decision in favour of the Eongotai team, the judge stressed the closeness of thocontest. Of the opposers of the motion he particularly congratulated Miss Milne, and of the affirmation speakers, G. S. Bichards. Eichards becomes the Kongotai senior debater for the year and tho winner of the Eoso Cup,
