FACTORY SWEATING?

SUPPORT FOR INQUIRY

WAGES AND HOURS

Referring to a. statement made in the House of Representatives by Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., that instances of sweating in garment factories in 'Wellington has been brought uiidar his notice, Mr. J. Abol, president of the "Wellington! Manufacturers' Association, stated today that members'* of the association would welcome an investigation into the conditions under which factories arc run and "would grant every facility to the officers of whatever department of the Government might Ijo set the task of making such an investigation. It would be unfair, said Mr. Abel, to as kany of those making: complaints to name any particular factory, , for even if such cases, and cases where tho labour laws are. not being observed, were mentioned, it would bo only by an investigation by Government officials that the fwcls would be brought out. Such an investigation, Mr. Abel sug'gestsil, should, aim at ascertaining what are the hours worked by individuals in such a .factory and whether tho wages paid are in conformity to the respective minimum rates under the various awards according to years of service. "Such information could be easily secured by Government officials who have tho right of investigating the wages books and of interrogating individual workers," said Mr. Abel.
