CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Yv'ANGANUI, October 27. The conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce decided today that tho next annual conference should bo held at Christchurch. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. A. M. Seaman (Auckland); vice-president, Mr. S. 11. E. Turner (Christehurch); executive, Messrs. A. S. Burgess (Wangamu), H. T. Mcrritt (Auckland).' S. Spence (Napier), A. i\ Wright (Christchui-cli), W. Machin (Canterbury), A-. 11. Allen ■(Dimedin), C. B. Taplcy (luvereargill), and L. D. Kcrr, C. A. L. Troadwcll, D. J. MteGowan, Stronach Paterson, J. Harrigan, 6. C. Mac Caul, and H. J. James (Wellington). Mr. W. Machin was re-elected vice-president ' of tho Federated Chambers of the British Empire. A remit was carried urging that, legislation by Washiug-TJp Bills be vigorously curtailed. The executive was instructed to negotiate for more favourable shipping freights to and from the Dominion. The conference protested against Government trading ventures being accorded tho protection of the Crown Suits Act, and considered that when the Crown was a litigant ia respect of trading ventures it should be bound by the same laws'as operate between subject and subject. A unanimous vote was .recorded against the present restrictive provisions of tho Board of Trade Act, Commercial Trusts, ' and Cost of Living Acts, and the Government is to be asked to amend these measures. On the votes, the conference approved of the abolition of land tax and the substitution of income tux. With regard to commercial examinations, the executive was instructed to call a conference of institutions interested with a view to adopting a uniform standard of examination. The encouragement of commercial aviation with a.view.to increasing tho efficiency of the Dominion's air force, was unanimously decided upon.
