FOE EX-SERVICEMEN
CORPS OF COMMISSIONAIRES
Details in connection with the formation of a corps of commissionaires were furnished to "The Post" today by Captain A. A. Monks, one of the organisers. Captain Monks said that the corps o£ commissionaires in the United Kingdom was formed about 70 years ago and consisted of thousands of ex-servicemen. The sole object was to find suitable employment for its members and it had always done that with complete success. About five years ago it was proposed to form a .similar corps in New Zealand, and tho proposal, with others, was investigated by a Royal Commission, which reported very favourably. Later it. was reported on favourably by the House of Representatives. The result as regarJs benefit to the returned soldier, after five years, however, was nil. About ten weeks ago an unemployed exsoldier took the matter up, and with the assistance of one or two in similar circumstances bad brought the corps into existence, produced actual results, found employment, and laid the foundations of a successful corps, which was on the high road to complete success and promised in 'the very near future to find employment for many ex-servicemen. "The result obtained to date is mainly due to the efforts of one man who has 'worked early and late, under every possible disadvantage, interviewing all classes of people, from Cabinet Ministers downwards, and enlisting their moral support for the corps," said Captain Monks. "I say moral support advisedly, because I wish to make it quite clear that to elate no one connected with the formation of the corps has received a single penny from any source whatever." Captain Monks added that he would be pleased to give fuller details of the organisation to. any person interested in the welfare of ex-servicemen. His address was 12 Bank Road, Northland, Wellington. ____^_«___________
