KING THOMOND'S RECORD

King Thomond, who .scored a double success at the recent Wellington Meeting, has taken some time to show hia best form, but with age he is now racing very consistently and further successes arc almost certain to come his way before long. He was a. very late foal, being born in the January or February of his year, bo that he is younger by many months than his book age. He iB a solidly if not fashionably bred five-year-old gelding by Thomond, a Polydamon horse from theCKirig's Guest mare Sweet Tipperary (a C. J.C. Welcome Stakes winner) who has not had many chances, but who earlier left a eouplo of useful sorts in Lord Thoraond uud Ephialtes. The darn of King Thomond is Northern Rose, a mare by Finland from Rose Shield (a sister to Royal Artillery and Screw Gun), by Hotchkiss from Rose of Wellington, by St. Leger. Northern Rose, who is a half-sieter to the dam of Lord Thomond and Ephialtes. has been a very successful mare at the stud, and among her earlier progeny wer£ Miss de Val (daro of Degage and Joie de Val), Trentham Rose, Swanee River, Lord Desmond, and Beaumont, who all more than paid their way on the Turf. \ For his first two seasons or so King Thomond was raced' without much luck by his breeder, the trainer F. J. Carmont. He had one start late as a two-year-old, and the following season managed three minor placings in seven starts. As a four-year-old last season he still could not do better than minor stakes till his present owner, Mr. W. M. Crystall, of Palmereton North, obtained a, lease of him in the autumn and handed him to R. E. Hatch to train. At the first meeting he attended, the Wairarapa fixture at Easter, ho won, and he scored again at Wauganui in May. This season he had llirce good seconds to. his credit in t':rco starts prior to his dual success. In all he has won four races to date in twentysftven starts, and his earnings amount to £515, of which £365 is for firsts. .
