BOLD BID'S COURAGE

RECENT UNLUCKY DEFEAT

(Special from "Hurry On.") NEW PLYMOUTH, October 27. Though none of the New Plymouth contingent succeeded in winning a race at Waverley all shaped reasonably well and most would be benefited by the racing. I Bold Bid did .best and, he was rather I unlucky to suffer a head defeat by Constant Sun in the Monmahaki Hack Handicap. He followed St. Clara and Constant Sun out of the barrier and looked like settling down in third place, but the other two were immediately steadied, and before Bold Bid's,rider realised what was happening he was out in front. He led round the home turn but was immediately challenged by St. Clara on the inside and by Constant Sun on the outer. However, the three-year-old displayed plenty of courage find disputed every inch of the ground, being beaten by Constant Sun only in the last few strides. It was a pleasing performance on his part, and he looks like proving a useful three-year-old. Unfortunately Bold Bid's nominations for Ellerslie were overlooked, and he is now to be given a short let-up. Mrs. W. D. Graham will probably be represented at Ellerslie by the two-year-old General Quex and by Easter Time. The racing that General Quex had at Avondale has worked a big improvement

in him, and he is bowling along in great style at present. Easter Time was unlucky at Waverky, where he suffered a bad bump after going three furlongs and lost several lengths/which made his chance hopeless. He came home in a manner that threw out possibilities. i - Past records show that the Brewer Handicap has been a!.bad one for the topweights, arid this was again exemplified on Monday. Both Refresher and Orapai had been galloping so well that their chances were highly rated, but both were well beaten at the'finish. The race should work a big improvement in these horses, but they will require softer tracks before they can show their best. The Stratford trainer J. Butler produced Sea Fox in the maiden aud the three-year-old proved equal to all demands. Though his margin was not great he was going away at the cud. Though not an impressive-looking horse this halfbrother by Hunting Song to Scatown has a nice style of galloping.. He was not very forward, and will improve a lot yet. Butler stated that all going well Sea Fox will take his place in the field for the Great Northern Guineas next week. Superior continues to get through her tasks in a satisfactory manner, "and there would seem to be every possibility of her going to Ellerslie forthe Welcome Stakes. Her connections ■ consider that she was unlucky to be beaten by Whenuakura at Foxton, and are anxious to meet the son of Chief Ruler again. She will be accompanied by one of R. Barlow's team, either Aussie Ra or Headmistress. ™ -
