SCHOOL MILE RECORD

SENSATIONAL TIME

TIMARU BOY'S RUN

(By Telegraph.) (Spoeial to the "Evening Post.") , TIMAEU, This Day. V. 1\ Boot smashed Lovelock's 192S mile record of 4miu 44 2-ssec in a special attempt in the senior championship raco at the Timaru Boys' High School sports this morning. Boot, who j was unpaced after a circuit and a half, established the now record in: the sensational time for a schoolboy of 4min 20 -i-ssec. The lap times were:1 — Gvsec, 71sec, GSscc, and 60 4-ssec. Earlier in the week Boot lowered Lovelock's 880 yards record of 2min' | 5 1-Sscc, clipping off 5 l-ssec by doing the- distance in 2min dead..

Last season a Christchureh Technical School boy covered one. mile in 4min. 29 l-oscc, time which was regarded as being easily the best ever recorded by a secondary school boy in New Zealand, and better also than the fastest, tinies on recowl for the same class of boys in Australia and England. Australia's record is set down at 4min 35 2-osec, and England's at 4min 32 3-ssec. There has been a speeding up in mile running in recent times, but over the whole period of New Zealand amateur athletic championships, the mile has been won more often than not in time siowcr than that made by the Timaru High School boy, Boot. That fact alone indicates thaj; the boy's performance is phenomenal.—"Sprinter."
