LIFE OF CRIME

PRISONER'S PROFESSION

COMMENTS BY JUDGE

(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evenino Post.") ■ CIIRISTCHURCH, This Day. An assurance, that tho prisoner would' not get much out of crime was given by Mr. Justice Reed in sentencing Albert William Gauntlett, for breaking, entering, and theft, to twelve months' hard labour, to be followed by twelve months' reformative treatment. His Honour said it was unfortunate that a man of the prisoner's apparent ability should be in his position. Twelve months ago he was convicted for receiving, and hardly was ho out lof gaol when ho committed the present offence. It was stated that on the last occasion he was before the Court ho had said he intended to lead a life of crime. If so, it was an extremely foolish thing i to do. In New Zealand criminals wero uo allowed to run very long.
