SIR KINGSFORD SMITH
CHOICE OF A MACHINE
It is regarded as practically certain that Sir Charles Kingsford Smith will take part in the. England-Melbourns race, though no announcement has been made as to the machine or type of machine which he is likely to fly. Immediately after his arrival at Melbourne, on the completion of his record-making solo flight, a proposal was made that Melbourne might well signify its recognition of his work for aviation by presenting him with a machine capable of winning the race. Sir Macpherson Robertson, the donor of the £15,000 prize for the race, in a public statement described Kingsford Smith as "Tsar of the Air," and said that he hoped that he would win the race, adding that he would confer with Sir Charles and others in regard to the possibility of his competing and the machine that would be needed. Everything possible should be done to enable him to- compete. Moreover, Captain E. \V. Percival, who designed the machine in which the solo record was made, has stated that he and those associated with him ar« considering the question of building a machine for the Melbourne Centenary flight. "Smithy and the Gull,"' h» added, had proved to be an excellent combination.
