OIL FROM COAL
PLANT FOR ATJSTEALIA
PRELIMINARY STEPS TAKEN
CANBERRA, October 26. Preliminary steps have been taken by tho Commonwealth Government to obtain plant at a cost of approximately £10,000,000 for tho extraction of oil from coal for the Newcastle and Maitland district. The plant will be capable of producing 50,000,000 gallons of oil a year, and thereby would become the nucleus of an essential oil supply in the event of Australia being cut off or blockaded in time of war. The Prime Minister stated he had had advice from Mr. Stanley Bruce that Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., > ■were willing to co-operate in every way iv tho establishing of a large-scale hydrogenation unit in Australia.
