MILDER WEATHER
AND FAIR TO FINE
The weaf her for the most part is likely to b3 fair to fine with milder temperatures, according to the forecast issued at noon today. Showers, however, may develop later in western and far southern districts of the South Island., Winds to the north of Kawhia and Tauranga will be moderate southwesterlies, but elsewhere freshening westerlies to north-westerlies may be expected. Although rather cool, the weather since yesterday morning has been for the most part fine. Southerly or southwesterly .winds gradually became general and were in sonic places strong. The only rain which fell, however, was confined to western districts and to the southern coast line, and even there the showers were only light. Barometers have risen considerably since yesterday, especially in the north, but a fresh depression seems to be forming over the south-eastern part of Australia. It will probably be some time, however, before the effects of this new disturbance will be felt in New Zealand to any great extent. Auckland's weather yesterday was mostly fair with a cool south-westerly breeze. A light shower or two fell (luring the afternoon. A cool southerly wind continued to blow in Wellington yesterday afternoon after the midday change from northwosterlies, and the weather remained fair. Cloud at an altitude of 30,000 feet moved from a westerly direction at the unusually high velocity of 150 miles per hour. Towards evening the amount of cloud increased and between eight and ten o'clock the moon had a marked, halo around it. After about 8 p.m., the wind died down and early this morning there was a reversion to northerly winds again. These increased somewhat in force, but the weather remained fine. A fresh southerly breeze prevailed in Christchurch, yesterday and conditions wore at times threatening. Winds, however, gradually became more westerly in direction, and last night and this morning skies were clearer with a tendency for light north-easterly winds. Fine and sunny weather "prevailed in Dunedin yesterday. The wind was a moderate south-westerly, but by this morning was northerly in direction.
