IiEAGUE OF WHEELMEN

THE WELLINGTON CENTRE

Confirmation of the decision earlier in the week to form a Wellington Centre of the League of New Zealand Amateur Wheelmen was given without fi dissentient voice at a meeting of übout sixty cyclists and supporters of the cycling movement last evening. A Chairman, a secretary, a treasurer, and fl, provisional committee wore elected, and other stops were taken to put the organisation on a working basis. The meeting was presided over by Mr. A. A, Nattrass, who, when it came to the election of officers, was appointed chair, jnan amidst applause. ' Mr. Nattrass sketched the trend of '.recent events and circumstances leading toHhe setting up of the League of 'Wheelmen in Christchurch. He said 1 hat when the various centres were .formed they would be able to appoint •delegates to: attend a lionferenee at •which any recommendations in regard to the constitution of the league could be made, if thought necessary. When -tile league was completed he thought the cyclists would have what they, had Tieen aiming at to his knowledge for the last four or five years. He appealed •to' those present to forget about the past. He wanted to see every faction Sn the cycling movement come together and from that night pull together. (ATHLETIC OFFICIALS' ATTITUDE. Mr. Nattrass said he had been in communication with Mr. A. C. Kitto, president of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre, and Mr. H. McCormick, ihairman of the executive, neither of whom was able to be present owing to prior engagements, and they had assured him they were sympathetic towards The new cycling movement as long as the cyclists pulled together and pro-r-eeded on constitutional lines. He believed they could come to an arrangement whereby the cyclists could work 5n with the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, to tho mutual benefit of both sections. Mr. Nattrass emphasised 'the. necessity for a spirit of sportsmanship, ana said he wanted them to make their slogan, "Cycling for sport's sake." (Applause.) Mr. Nattrass said that the position ■of clubs with athletes aha cyclists was provided for in the draft constitution <if the league. He suggested that purojy- cycling clubs should each elect two delegates ana cycling and- athletic clubs one delegate. '• In addition to Mr. Nattrass as cha.ir>ian, the following officers were electVd'.—Honorary secretary, Mr. H. J. T«utton; honorary treasurer, Mr. A. J. Couchman; provisional committee, Messrs. H. S. Abel, E. B. Lacey, G. S. Bright, M. Matson, ana E. T. Robson. Mr. Nattrass suggested that clubs m selecting their delegates should select men of ripe experience and judgment. The meeting considerea the question of finance, and in order to give the centre a start a collection was taken up among those present. It was decided to ask his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, to accept, the office of president.
