At the resumption at Aix-cn-Provene* of the trial of Catherine and Philoraen* Schmidt and Georges Sarret on charge* connected with the disappearance; 6f, persons after insurance, the Courtj after discussing the mysterious malign power which Sarret and . Catherine Schmidt alleged tbat each exercised over the other, heard the evidence of Dr. Murat, who certified the death of Lady Arnould, while she was with the' sister^ Schmidt. It was a natural death, with no sign of poison. ' ■ ~ Other evidence showed that Catherine's husband, who died four months, after he was insured, lost five and a half stone in weight in that. period. Witnesses declared that Philomene Schmidt went to a notary and arranged for power of attorney enabling her. to cash the money from the insurance, owing to the alleged death of Catherine. Tho notary entered the bos to confirm the story and fainted and was carried from the Court. Dr. Barral testified to making a postmortem examination on the body of a consumptive girl, Magali Herbin. who died whilo in the care of the Schmidt sisters. The examination disclosed the enormous quantity of 2.7 grammes of zinc. Fifty centigrammes would be fatal. He considered that she was poisoned. ■ : Catherine Schmidt protested her innocence, declaring that Sarret often gave champagne to Magali, who complained of its taste. , The Court adjourned, after two wit* nesses nearly came to blows, iieccssi* tating the intervention of three polic*» men. .
