GREAT GERMAN ACTOR
WERNER KRAUSS IN LONDON
TRIUMPH ON SECOND NIGHT
LONDON, September 29. Several cries of "Hail, Hitler! rt were heard in the Shaftesbury Theatre,. on the second night of Gerhardt Hauptmann's play "Before Sunset," when tho famous German actor, Werner Krauss, made his. second appearance in the London West End.
On the first night thoro had been an outburst of hostility, accompanied by a flood of leaflets from the gallery, necessitating the loworing of the curtain several times.- Last night, however, Krauss was well received, and thete was no disturbance.- Thirty policemen wore among tho audience. At the end of the performance the actors appeared beforo tho footlights, the curtain rising and falling rapidly, as the company apparently feared missiles. A few dissentients cried, "Go back to Germany," but they were quickly silenced.
Krauss advanced to the footlights leading the producer, Scott, by v the hand, and embraced him. Scott,'- who was exceedingly nervous, announced: "Ladies and gentlemen, bringing Herr Krauss to London is the best I can ever do for the English theatre."
There was tremendous applause whon the curtain finally fell, partly as a tribute to the magnificent acting of Krauss, and partly to English sportsmanship seeking to make amends for tho previous night.
