RAGING AT FOXTON
MAIN RACE TO EMINENT
STYLISH WIN FROM BACK
The public ■warmed to the prospects of Chopin in the Robinson Handicap, the race -at the Foxton Kaeing Club's Spring Meeting on 'Saturday, but in the field of' sis he failed to gain even place | nioney. Two horses who hail not raced for several weeks, Eminent nnd All Humbug, proved- decidedly best, with that consistent minor ■ place-getter, Joie de Val, gathering tho remaining share of the stake. Eminent ■ appeared 'very favourably treated in receiving a ■ concession . from Chopin, ■ and he took full advantage of the chance. He had to race outside All Humbug all the way, behind Beryl Latour, Chopin, and Thrasher, but this was probably an advantage in the small field and at the rate the race was run, particularly over the first halt. He and Ail Humbug finally finished much too solidly for the leaders in tho straight, and he easily held All Humbug at bay by a length. .AH Humbug, after beginning best, was palled] in behind and he waited there on tho fence till reaching the straight. With tho way in front blocked, L. G. Morris had to take him off the rail right to the outside of Eminent, and after that he never, looked to hold any chance of reaching the winner. It is said that he had done very little recent fast work, so the race should assist very materially in bringing him on for his Avondale Cup engagement. Joie, .de Val was, as usual, ridden at the back, and she was last into the straight, but she finished well into third place, about half a length behind All Humbug. She lodged her claim when tho two who beat her began theirs, but she had no chance with them. Chopin, after being third and second in most of , the running, weakened near the end to be beaten by indies out of a place. Thrasher and. Beryl Latoiir failed to'stay..' •..-.;• ■ ■ .■'.'•'.. The-success-enabled Eminent to share with the Kurow winners, Polydoi-a and I'alantua, honour of being the first New Zealand Cup candidates to score after the appearance of the handicaps. The race .was his first since he unsuccessfully contested two events at the Grand National Meeting in August. His favourable impost on Saturday was indicated by comparison with the New Zealand Cup, in which ho was set 51b above Chopin. . '
