About seven years ago, under the regulations of the private hotels award, she was given the alternative of either going to considerable, expense in regard to.the staff and the appointments of the building, or reducing the number of guests, and she was forced to take the latter! course. She lost money as the result of a young man in her employ proving to be a thief, stealing various amounts, and finally taking a large sum,' some of which she had returned to her. When the depression came she had difficulty in keeping a sufficient number of guests to make the place pay. The St. Mark's Parish Board, which had shown her every consideration, had reduced the rent to £17 per month. The assets consisted solely at furniture.
