HANDICAPS COMPARED
CUP AND OTHER EVENTS
The weights awarded in the New Zealand Cup make in many cases interesting comparison with the weights awarded for some of the principal handicaps decided in the Dominion last season. Of course, as the 'New Zealand Cup handicappcr has had to consider the whole form shown during the season, no true deductions can be drawn from a few races, and this has always to be borne iv mind when setting any one race against another. The first comparison may well be made between last year's and this year's New Zealand Cup. Six of last year's field are again engaged, and their weights compare:—' 10,12. 1!)33.*> st. lb. St. lb. Five of the horses engaged in this year's Cup were also runners in the last Auckland Cup, and. a comparison of the weights is:— Auckland. X.Z. Cup. / ■ st. lb. St. lb. ' Having scored three successive victories in his opening engagements at five years old, Chatham appears to have bright prospects of having another successful season. At the close of his four-year-old: career it -\Vas feared that respiratory troubles would prevent him from reproducing his best form, but treatment has apparently effected a complete cure. He is engaged in the Epsom Handicap oh Saturday with'9.lo, 111b more than he carried to victory last year, when he ran the mile in the fast'time of lmin 37sec, and he promises to be favourite or near favourite.
