HUTT RIVER BOARD
The fortnightly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held yesterday. The engineer (Mr. W. Sladden) reported that he did not consider the complaint that the Shandon golf fairway had been flooded by the backing.up of water from the dead arm of the river was well founded. "The complaint, he thought, had been made under an erroneous impression. It was decided to reply to the complaint along the lines' suggested by the engineor.
Mr.: J. Brasell reported that he had made an-, inspection of the whole river, and had found'the plantations of pines and' other trees, including the willows, in excellent order. The- new plantation at Gear Island was coming away well, and the thanks of the board were due to the Lower Hiitt Borough Council for the gift of a number of trees.
The Hutt Valley »Lawn Tennis Association asked '.if ',■ the board had any areas on which tennis courts ■ could be, constructed. It was decided to-suggest to the association that the Hutt Park^ could supply grounds. The City Council advised that it would require three-areas of land on Gear Island of. about two acres, and asking if the" board 'would grant, the council an easement over the areas for the purpose of boring wells and-laying down.pipes, or whether it - would be necessary for the council to take the land under the Public Works Act. The opinion of the members ;was that an'easement ,would be the best'means of meeting.the position, but in the meantime'the question was held over pending other information. -The secretary reported that the sum of £789 had been collected in rates since the notices were" ■ issued on- September • 16.
