COST OF LIVING
EFFECT OF EXCHANGE
SUGGESTION TO GOVERNMENT
The contention that the fall in tho cost of living, as disclosed by the Government Statistician's figures, would have been considerably greater had it not been for the increase in the exchange rate, was made by Mr. W. J. Jordan (Labour, Mamikau) in tho House of Representatives last night. .
Mr. Jordon said that the Minister of Labour (the Hon. A. Hamilton) had stated that the .cost ■• of living had fallen CS points from May of last year to August of this year. In twelvo months the fall had been 39 points. However, the drop1 would have been much greater had the, exchange rate not been increased to 25 per cent. The prices in New Zealand wero the same as world ( parity, and that meant that the .goods produced internally wereloaded with the exchange rate. Naturally, the exchange, premium was added to imported goods* and there was.no doubt that the people were paying heavily for the ' Government's policy. The Government might aptly show how much lower the cost of living would have been had not the exchange rate been raised. • - - ■ • ■ ■■■,■•
