CENTRAL BANK
ME, COATES'S- STATEMENT
CHALLENGE TO ACCURACY
' In tho House of Representatives this ifternoon. Mr. R. A. Wright (Government, AVellington Suburbs) asked tiie Minister of Finance if his attention had been drawn to a letter in last evening's "Post," signed "by Sir Henry B'uckleton, in which tho writer challenged the accuracy of the statements contained in the pamphlet issued by the Minister in defen.ee of tho Reserve Bank.
. "If,. so," . aiked Mr. Wright, "will the Minister explain to the. House wherein the letter referred to is inaccurate .(if it 13 inaccurate) and thus relieve the anxiety of numbers of electors in New Zealand who are greatly disturbed by the proposed establishment of a Reserve Bank?"
""I have'seen the letter in question, which deals with thij pre-war regulative provisions in regard to note issue," said Mr. Co'ates. "The point, however, hardly.touches the fringe of the problem sot out in my pamphlet. The issue of notes-is-only one aspect of the activities of a Central Bank and is becoming a decreasingly important side. The success pf a Central Bank will, of cinirse, .depend on ttie co-operation nf all interests. The implications of my statements, will be. seen when the Reservo" Bank proposal is brought before 'tho House." ' ,
