COMPULSORY CLAUSES

GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS

The possibility of the Government putting tho compulsory clauses of the SinaH-Farms (Relief of Unemployment) Act into operation was mentioned by the Minister of Lands (tho Hon. E. A. Ransom), when replying in the Houso of Representatives this afternoon to a question addressed to him by Mr. T. D. Burnett' (Government, Tdmuka). ■ .

Mr. Burnett asked if, in view of the growing demand.in Canterbury for small holdings of from 20 to 50 acres, and the marked disinclination on tho part of landowners to lease areas under the Act, the Minister would make a statement as to the Government's intentions.

The Minister said that tho Governmoiit would take into consideration the necessity -Of putting the compulsory clauses of ,-tho : Act into, operation, and, if necessary, would, purchase lands instead of proceeding by "'way of lease.
