YORKSHIRE DOWN AGAIN

UNEXPECTED RESULTS

BTJELESQUE AT OVAL United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received August 26, 1 p.m.) LONDON, August 25. The series of county cricket championship matches which finished today had some unusual features as well as unexpected results. The champions, Yorkshire, were again defeated, this time by Surrey on the first innings. Annoyed because Surrey, with the score at 524 for five wickets, did not declare at luncheon, Yorkshire burlesqued the game at the Oval. Verity in bowling placed every fielder, including the wicket-keeper, on the leg side of the wicket, and sent a number of overarm balls that were almost wides on the on-side. Then in the middle of the over he bowled underarm balls which wcro almost grubbers. But he had the laugh turned against him when the umpire no-balled the latter under the rule requiring the bowler to indicate any change of deliveries. Verity completed the over with overarn deliveries, after which Surrey declared with'a record total against Yorkshire. There was an unusual incident at the opening of Yorkshire's innings. Sandham caught Holmes at mid-on off a no-ball, and Sutcliffe, backing up too far, was run out. Gloucestershire, playing Warwickshire, tried every player, including the wicket-keeper, as bowler. In the Worcestershire-Hampshire match, small scores, in the first innings, Worcestershire heading Hampshire by one run, were followed up with hea/y scoring in the second innings. Lancashire and Essex each made the same total in the first innings, and a close contest resulted in Lancashire's favour. Numerous good individual performances were recorded, Walters leading the batsmen with 190 not out, followed by Squires with 178. ' Barling, Nichol, Mead, and Bates also scored centuries, with Bates and Leyland registering good batting doubles. Excellent bowling figures were also plentiful.
