OLD-TIME SHIPS' BELLS
(To the Editor.) [ Sir, —I have recently read in your paper some interesting correspondence regarding the bells of old-time ships and their subsequent use. I trust some of your correspondents may help to tiace the history of an old bell at the State school ".t Spring Grove, Kelson, reputed to be .the one which belonged to the Fifeshire, ■which was cast up on the rock at the entrance of Nelson Haven on February 27. 1842. The wreck was salvaged and brouslit into harbour and bought by a Mr. . Poynter. who had it broken up and the timber sold to various settlers. The bell in question has been used lor school purposes in the same district for well over eighty years. It bears on the inside a raised inscription: "Sir William Wallace, J.P.. 1535," but apparently there was never a ship of that name tradins to the colony. Settlers in'the'district are interested. Any reliable information regarding the bell would be welcomed.—l am, etc.. ; ■ ' F. V. KXAPP. Kelson, August 24.
