Studious Bent

A strong friendship exists between Holland's future- sovereign and her second cousin, Lady May Abel Smith, formerly Lady May Cambridge, daughter of Princess Alice and Lord Athlone(states the "Daily Mail"). Before her marriage Lady May Abel Smith often stayed with Princess Juliana. Princess Juliana, who is now 24, is an outstanding personality among the royal young women of Europe. For some years she was a student at Leyden University, where, in 1930, she passed her final law examination. On completing her studies, which also included philosophy and theology, she was presented with the honorary degreeof Doctor of Literature and Philosophy, and high tribute was paid to her intellectual capacity. Her fellow women students, numbering 350, gave her an album containing their autographs and photographs of the professors and other officials of the university as a keepsake. Her studious bent persists, and she takes keen pleasure in exploring many channels of modern thought. PRACTICAL QUALITIES. At the same time she can be extremely practical and businesslike. Two years ago, when she acted as her mother's private secretary during that official's absenco on holiday, her success astonished the Court. It is, however, her ability in domestic matters that especially endears her to tho Dutch people. She is an excellent cook, having studied the art of the kitchen under the direction of'cxperts. On many occasions she has entertained her friends to meals which she herself has prepared. She has great facility in inventing new dishes. Her own favourite dish consists of sausages served with apple sauce. Princess Juliana speaks' English | fluently, and displays a markedly English preference for a simple and "free and easy" mode of living. She is particularly fond of camping.
