DE LUXE THEATRE.
That remarkable actress Helen • Hayes plays . the leading role In Metro-Goldwyn-Maycr s film version of "The White Sister," which began its Wellington season at the Do Luxe Theatre last evening. . "The White Sister" was made as a aim' in the silent days, and it scarcely needs to be said that the present version is a 'much more " moving, artistic, and' spectacular production- than : its predecessor. Unusually long, it. Is extremely well presented and is embellished by one of the most brilliant performances that .Helen Hayes^ has given. The romantic and colourful . story •• slowly untolds. A lieutenant in the Italian Flying Corps and the daughter of a penniless prince fall in love. But thctr love is marked by tragedy from the first, arid the girl feels that they cannot marry. She Tecorers from a great grief to make ready for her wedding just at the outbreak of war. Then, just before he is to come back home on leave. Lieutenant Giovanni Severi (Clark Gable) is sent on a mission against tne enemy communications and is shot down in flames behind the Austrian lines. It is from this point that {he film becomes more spectacular. Carnivals, great scenes of war, and splendid pageants of religion, fill, the picture, and nil serve as the background to a story of the most intense variety which is excellently played. "The White Sister" decidedly makes its mark among the better, films of the year. There Is a long programme'ln support, several newsrecls, a pic- . ture.of big game fishing in New Zealand waters, and a colourful prologue for the feature film-, rounding off the bill.
