CYLINDER WEAR
''The Motor reports that an interim report p£ the .excellent work being done by the research- and standardisation. Committee of tlie ' Institute of Automotive- Engineers in investigating the causes of. .cylinder wear makes interesting reading. The tests extended over eighteen months, and were most carefully carried":out;-' every popular theory advanced'as to the causes of excessive bore wear was investigated. Broadly speaking, the main conclusion is-that most of the wear occurs when the cylinder temperature is low and lubrication is scanty. Corrosion caused by the- products of combustion (for example, by water and certain acids) was found to be.an important contributory factor when, the, wall ".temperature was low enough to encourage condensation. This theory was confirmed by the reduction of wear which occurred when an. engine was..run on hydrogen.
