A man had received an increase of salary which rendered him liable to income tax' for the first time.' He received the usual demand notes, but, not understanding them, threw them away. Finally an inspector called, and the man asked him to explain matters. "Well, it's like this," said the inspector.; "Suppose you earned £1000, you would have to pay, say, £100 or bo for income tax." ' ' . "And if I lost £1000, would they give me £100?" "Oh, no," was the reply. ; "Well,'l shan't join," said the man decidedly.
