CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, August 23. As a result of today's series of games in the New Zealand women's championship hockey tournament the following teams still remain unbeaten:—Canterbury, Southland, Otago, and Bush. The surprise o£ the day was the East-crn-Marlborough match, which resulted in a draw. Eastern were expected to win, as Marlborough had lost to Bush on the opening day 3-0 and had just beaten Wairarapa A 2-1 on Thursday. Another surprise was the defeat oi Wellington by Raahine, who scored an easy victory over the hitherto undefeated southerners, the home side always being on top. Details of the day's play were:— Section A. Akitio 9, beat Ruahine B 0. Canterbury 5, beat Auckland ]. Southland" 2, beat Wairarapa B 1. Section B. Feilding 2. beat Ashburton 1. Ruahine A 4, beat Wellington 1. Otago 7, beat Wanganui 0. Section C. . Marlborough drew with Eastern, 1-all. Manawatu 2, beat Taranaki 1. The Southland-Wairarapa B match was a very hard-fought game. Wairarapa were very aggressive. - Southland led 1-nil at half-time. Miss E. Bell scoring ■ from a scramble in the circle. Soon after starting the second half; Wairarapa went right through, Miss E. Best'equalising. Wairarapa pressed very hard," but the Southland forwards came with a great rush and Miss L. Heaps goaled. The game between Wellington and Kua.hine was a very fast contest. The first spell ended in favour of Ruahine 2-nil. In the second half Ruahine had the upper hand, playing with fine combination. The Wellington defence was weak. Scorers for Ruahine were Misses R. D. Ahlberss, X. Collett (2), and Mrs. Nicholas. For Wellington Hiss H. McClellan scored." DANNEVIRKE, This Day. ■After heavy overnight rain, the weather is brilliantly fine for the fourth day of the women's hockey championship, with the- grounds in good order. -This morning's game in the A section, Auckland v. Wairarapa B, was .won comfortably by Auckland by 3 goals to nil. The scorers were Miss A. Bishop and Miss M. Rossiter (2).
