TRIAL FOR COTTESMORf
NEW ZEALAND CUP HORSES
Principal interest in the work at Trcntham this morning was the finish-ing-off gallop hero of one of tho centre's A.J.C. Epsom hopes, Cottesmore, who, assisted by his stablemate, Joie de Val, ran seven furlongs the reverse "way, and did it well. The trial grass track, which "was used, was wet and slushy after rain. Cottesmore, who was ridden by. S. Wilson, and Joie de Val, who was ridden by W. E. Shaud, jumped, off some way before reaching the winning post, and the former, on the outside, had to be eased to allow the mare to keep -with him. They reached the three furlongs together in 41iscc, the half-mile together in aojscc, and the seven furlongs, with Cottsmore a couple or more lengths clear, in lmin 38sec. There was nothing special about the time, but Cottesmore was doing just what his companion could, manage most of the way, then left her when required with the utmost ease. The Hunting Song gelding has never looked as well as at present, and if all goes right with, him he should not be disgraced on | his Australian trip. Trcntham claims seven of the fortynine New Zealand Cup entrants, and their' work also attracted attention. Autopay, of course, is in Australia. Joie de Val worked with Cottesmore. Eed Sun did two solid rqunds on the sand. Epigram bowled along pleasingly over two rounds of half-pace work. Eminent sprinted up the back stretch and down the straight. Milurbw did easy work only. Flower ran half a mile attractively. . .'•>.■ Flower (Wilson) went with Pegged Exchange (B. Morris) and Shootist (J. D. Martin). She and Pegged Exchange were soon clear, and near the finish the mare drew out to win the trial by a length in a tick under 52sec. j Shootist, finishing, on,, was a length behind Pegged Exchange, who appeared to mix it a little.near the end on the slushy track. Palm Queen (Shand) was just a shade in front of Cape Fair (G. F. Dick), with. Quietly (A. Gallagher) some lengths, back, after running the last three furlongs of their work in 40sec. Quietly failed to handle the going at all. Dignified March (L. Harding) and Acceptable (J. K. Robertson) were together throughout an easy half-mile In. 54sec. Quebec (Wilson) ran the last three of six furlongs lazily in 43sec. Te Ua (I. Eohloff) was quickly clear of Colossical (E. Smith) in their half-mile, and he came home four or five lengths in front in-54Jsec. Colossical seemed unable to raise a gallop, but it was noted,.on his return to the centre that he was very heavily shod, and on the slushy track this would have accounted for his showing. Afterwards Te Ua jumped the pony, hurdle again with a great leap. Misfire (Wilson) had the upper hand over Roderick Dhu (Martin) some way from the post in their half-mile, and was not extended to come home half a length in front in 52}soc. Members of S. J. Eeid's team, including Might, Forestry, and Zetes, sprinted up the back and down the straight in their couple of rounds of pacing. Palace did a round at a good half pace. . . Some of ■ tho two-year-olds are. now sprinting along on the two-year-old track. Capital (Paper Money—Aunt Madge) and Morbury (Chief Ruler— Pebble II) were together at the end of half a. mile in's2see. Three other of W. McConkey's youngsters, Orby's Last (Capo Horn—Lady Orby), Barnum (Cape Horn—Melting Moment), and Cape Morn (Cape Horn—Lady Wayward), did trotting and cantering. Tutor (Chief Ruler —Graciosa),- the most forward of S. J. Eeid's juveniles, wont five furlongs, sprinting home the last two furlongs. Retlern (Rosenor — Sir Knox mare), in T. Pritchard's team, did three furlongs in 40sec.
