REV. FATHER S. MAHONY
The Rev. Father Stanislaus Mahony, S.M., one of the best-known members of the Catholic clergy, having spent most of his life in Wellington, died in the Lewisham Hospital last evening, aged 67 years. He had been associated with St. Mary of the Angels' Church, Boulcott Street, since 19115. The late Father Mahony, who was born in London, came to New Zealand as a child, with his parents. He was educated at the Marist Brothers' School, Boulcott Street, and at St. Patrick's College, where he was the first student enrolled. He subsequently entered the Marist Seminary at Meanee, Hawke's Bay, where he studied for tho priesthood. .Father Mahony was ordained a priest in 1893, together with his Grace Archbishop O'Shea and the late Father _D. Malone, S.M. After his ordination, he was stationed successively at Christchurch, Hokitika, Leeston, Nelson, and Wanganui. An able and forceful preacher, he was a brother of the late Father George Mahony, formerly of Wanganui, who, after a period of ill-health, died at St. Mary's Presbytery, Boulcott Street,"* about two years ago. Father Mahony was appointed parish priest of St. Mary of the Angels' Church, Bouleott Street, in 1916, and remained .there till his death. In May,' 1918, a fire destroyed the old church. Although, owing to the war, almost insuperable difficulties had to be faced, Father Mahony decided to build a new and a larger church; the generosity of the people enabled this great undertaking to bo successfully carried out, and the new church was blessed and opened for Divine worship in 1922. Father Mahony's remains will rest before the altar at St. Mary's tomorrow, and tho funeral, following Requiem Mass, at 9 a.m., will take place on Monday.
