GAS STOLEN
HALFPENCE IN METER
As the result of inserting halfpence into a gas meter instead of shillings,: 4j young woman appeared before Mr.. IV Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court! today on a charge of stealing gas. ■ Sub-Inspector Martin ■■ wild that, * shilling-in-the-slot gaa meter was installed in a house in Wanganui where the woman had been living. After she had left Wanganui to come to .'Wellington the inetor was read, and it was found that instead of it containing nine shillings it contained nine half pinnies. When the woman wag located ih» said that she had put the halfpennies in: because she was, short of eaih 'at the* time. She said that she inteaded tof pay the amount owing. _^ . The Magistrate said that the Probation Officer's report was favourable. It was stated that the defendant, who lad no previous convictions, was in Terjr poor circumstances. The defendant was admitted to probation for a period of twelve months, and ordered to make restitution. An order was made repress* ing her name. ■
