ALWAYS WELL CLEAR
PASSION FRUIT'S TRIAU
One of ;the easiest wins at-the meeting was registered by.the Wo-year-old Passion Fruit in the Trial Plate. Prom the rail position he began with great alacrity, and he was always clear of the others. Nightly, was; his nearest attendant throughout, but he kept going away even from, this opponent/whom he finally beat home-by-five lengths. ' The winner'is a ■ very promising and highly-bred bay gelding by Lord Quex from the Boniform-mare Los Vegas, the dam also o£ ■ Athens• II -(6.N. Guineas), Quixotic '.'. (A.J.C. Challenge Stakes), and Los Gatos (A.J.C. (Sires' Produce Stakes),, and he carries the colours o£ Mr. 0.-Nelson, the owner also of Royal limiting. He had previously, raced on. only five occasions, winning' at Waipukurau on Boxing Bay, and being .beaten only by Foreign Queen at Hastings recently. The services of B. H. Morris were made available for him by the scratching of Pladie. Nightly, who. recently ran a second at Ashburton, was easily second best in the field. This two-year-old son of Night Raid also' began' smartly,- which is not always a feature about the stock. of his sire, and he was nearest to the winner from start to finish. He is owned by Mr. J. A. McDougall, and he hails from ]?. D. Jones's stable at Riccarton, to; which he was recently transferred from Washdyke. He was brought, north.with an .excellent track reputation, and;,.this caused.him to be sent out third selection each way in yesterday's big field. Cyclonic, .a. two-year-old half-brother by Hunting- Song to: Cylinder, continued the improvement he indicated between his only 151-lor races at the Hawke's Bay meetings; recently by coming from some way back:-"with a strong claim in: the.straight to-finish;-within a length and a half of Nightly. - He is; owned by the Hastings trainer,/J.-H.-Jefferd, and'he looks like turning out-a worthy relative to".Cylinder. The'best of the beaten'horses were En Vidette, .-Epigram, Secrecy,". Windward, Asterisea, Redtopj Headmistress, ■ and Weatherzane; En Vidette, Epigram, and Secrecy all: finished- on well. Headmistress, the wm'favourite, slightly better supportedthan the.winner, evidently, did not;jump away with, her reputed■■« smartness from: an outside barrier position,- as she wasnever within range of the front. Hunting Lodge, whose colours were" .prominent early, failed to hold-her; position.'Cariiella Horn.faded out only in the last furlong after being third into the straight.. Errantry'was never sighted. ■ .
