COMBATING FARM PESTS
Investigations, at present being made into the problems; of. destroying ragwort and the grass grub were described by Dr. David Miller, of the Cawthron Institute, in a lecture on insects, at Hamilton (states the "Itfew Zealand Herald"). Dr. Miller said the institute was observing the' habits of insect parasites which would undoubtedly kill both these pests.
The parasite which had been brought from Chile to combat the grass grub was giving excellent results under test, and a larger shipment was coming. There was another effective parasite in Japan, and arrangements were being made to import a, number of cocoons. Besearch work had also shown that tho seed fly was an- excellent parasite for combating ragwort. When a head of the plant was infested with itj not a single seed could develop. jThe institute would be in a position to liberate quantities of this fly early next year. ■ • - ■ ■■
