BESETTING CHARGES

'Four men who have boon taking a prominent partJn. the relief workers' strike, Charles Norris Brooks,:.labourer and clerk, aged 37 years, Richard Henry Webb, labourer-and engine driver, aged 28, Charles Frederick Barker, a labourer, agedl 49, and John Harvey Blair, a labourer, aged 37, were arrested at their homes by detectives last night and appeared before Mr. E. Page," S.M., at tho Magistrate's Court today. They were: all charged with unlawfully besetting a. place where relief workers were engaged, with a view to compelling them to abstain from doing acts which they had a legal right to do. .', ; The accused refused to entcj- pleas to the charges. Barker said that ho thought jit was. farcical to plead, and Webb said that he refused', to recognise the Court. '.■■..'

Chief-Detectivo Carroll asked that the accused should be remanded until Tuesday. By their answers, he said, the Court would have noted the type of men the accused wore. The charges against them arose out of the present partial strike of relief workers. Yesterday afternoon the accused wero at the vhead of a .group of about 350 men who visited the relief jobs endeavouring to get men to leave their work. In order to avoid trouble, men had; boon taken off their jobs when the group was seen appearing. The Chief Detective said ;that if bail was granted he Would ask that it bo substantial.
