HUTT VALLEY CLUB
The annual report of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club states that during tho year the club made solid progress and attendances on club trips were, .well maintained. Fifty new members were elected, and the membership is,now 138, which represents an increase of 33 for the past year. Club trips, and especially the Christmas and .Easter tramps, continue to bo popular, states the report. . The. attendance on 33 trips (for weekends and longer) averaged 24. The Christmas camp at Wajkawa Bay attracted-43 members. At Christmas other members 'visited Kapiti Island, the Waiinakariri, and Mount Egmont, and a. crossing was made of the Northern Tararuas. In spite of the dullish weather, "the Easter trip to Mangahao was enjoyed by 37 members. A party of six went on the Easter Waimakariri trip, but as the weather was unfavourable for climbing, no ascents were made. A large number of members attended the anual sports meeting organised' by the' Tararua Tramping Club. The combined clubs' trips to Eeikorangi and Mangakotukutuku were well patronised. Both trips were favoured with good weather. A small party of six made the official winter crossing of the Southern Tararuas, and were lucky enough to obtain clear .views from Mount Hector. On Labour weekend two members made the ascent of Mount Ngaruahoe in bad weather. Last February, Mr. I. Powell led a party on an attempt to climb the nneonquered Mount Evans, but after camping at the foot of the mountain in a bivi tent for eight nights in snow and rain, a retreat was made to the base camp in the Bakaia Valley. Conditions prevented the party seeing the mountain, much less attempting to tlimb it.
