SPECTACULAR AND THRILLING PLAY
ANOTHER STIRRING GAME AT THE PARK
An Eastbourne invasion, recognised as being capable of hampering Wellington College Old Boys in their strong bidding for championship honours in the senior A grade first division Rugby football competition, did not halt the leaders but it served to provide another stirring and exciting contest at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon, as had been the case when the two teams clashed on the King's Birthday. The game on Saturday was fast, keen, and hard, and with its many thrilling episodes it provided great sport for some seven thousand spectators. Old Boys again had to exert themselves fully for victory, and this they achieved in the end by a margin of six points. Wellington, now showing the form expected of them, registered another good performance in defeating Athletic decisively at Newtown Park. Marist as usual presented difficulties to Petone, and the result of this match, played at Petone, was a draw. Hutt were much too good for St. Patrick's College Old Boys and outplayed the promoted team in the second spell. Poneke, too, were superior to Oriental, though this promoted team again showed that it is able to set up fairly strong opposition. The second division matches were in most cases well contested, and some surprise results were furnished. , :.
Wellington College Old Boys lead in the top division by three points from Hutt and Poneke, with whom St. Patrick's College Old Boys are bracketed through points gained in the second division. Wellington have moved up to within striking distance. The points in both divisions are shown in the tables.
