SMITHFIELD MEAT MARKET

LONDON, June 24. Pespite the further rise in values, Smithfield retail prices have not noticeably» advanced. Consequently the more- cheerful outlook of a fortnight ago is still further improved. An instance of the improvement is that Victorian Down lambs reached 7d a lb and Victorian prime lightweights 6%d. . The consumption of mutton and lamb remains high, particularly the latter, of which almost 500,000 carcasses were cleared in the United Kingdom in one week recently, which is probably unprecedented.

The Bank of New Zealand, Produce Department, has received the following advice from its .London oflice as at close of business this week: —"The. demand and prices for Wether mutton are steady. There is a moderate demand for ewes, but prices are fh-m. The advance in prices for lambs has checked the demand. Smaller supplies have caused prices to harden. Trade in beef is very slow. Trade generally has fallen off." : . Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated June 23:—"Compared with last week's quotations, Down lamb l-8d per lb higher; crossbred lamb, 28/3Glb; l-8d per lb higher; 36/421b, %d per lb higher; second quality lamb, l-8d per lb higher; wethers under 481b 5-8 d per lb higher; 48/561b, %d per lb higher; ewes under 561b and 61/721b, l-8d per lb higher. Market quiet, but steady."
