FIRE BRIGADE FUNERAL

LARCELY ATTENDED '.

; The funeral of the late Captain T. i T. Hugo, formerly Government In-spector'-of Fire! Brigades, was largely i attended yesterday afternoon, and-an interested crowd of - seyeral1 hundred people lined .the streets at the Manners Strect-Taranaki Street intersection to see the cortege pass from the memorial chapel of _1. Morris, Jun., Ltd., on its way through Manners Street, Willis ; Street, Lambton Quay, Boweu - Street, Glenmore Street, and-1 Chaytor Street, , ; to Karori, The cortege was headed by ; one of . the Wellington Brigades..engines,* dismantled for the, occasion to bear the casket, and followed by two fire pump^ , from Wellington,, a hose carriage.frcjßi , Petone, and a pump,from, Lower Hul^ which carried thirty-five ,brigadesmea . in uniform under Superintendent C. A. Woolley. The Petone; Brigado was re- . presented by Superintendent Gaynor, while the Hutt Brigade was also represented. The casket, covered by tha Union Jack, was buried beneath a. wealth of beautiful wreaths. ' : Services were held by the Rev. -J. R. Blanchard in the memorial - chapel, and also at the crematorium. The chief - mourners were Mr. V. Hugo; son of the deceased, and Miss J. Robertson (Mr. V. Hugo's, halfsister^.- The pall-bearers were Messrs. R. Roberts and A. Partou (representing . the Wellington Bowling Club), Superintendent C. A. Woolley and Senior Station Officer, J. Garwood (Wellington Fire Brigade), Mr. L. V. 0. Gibson (representing the New Zealand branch of th& Institute of Fire Engin- ■ eers), Mr. T. B. Clarko (representing the Fire Engineers' * Institute of Great Britain), and Captain S. Holm (representing the. New Zealand Company of Master .Mariners). Among those present were Messrs. Malcolm Fraser, R. Girling Butcher (Inspector of Fire Brigacles), and D. Ardell (representing the Department of Internal Affairs), Messrs. N. W. Nelson and H. Snowdem - Fail-child (chairman and secretary of.the Wellington, Fire Board), Senior Councillor W. H. Bennett and Mr. John O'She.(City Solicitor), Mr. D. McKcnzio (Mayor of. Petone), Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., Captains. J. Spence, and HitieMunro' (Harbour Board), Mr. rG; G. Hodgkins (Registrar-General's Depart- . ment), Mr. John Philp (representing • the New Zealand Fire Brigade Officers' and Members' Institute), Mr. L. C. Gibbons, (secretary: of the council of tho Fire and Accident : Underwriters' Associations of Now Zealand), Captain F. *A. Macindoe (Merchant Service Guild), Messrs. A. ■ Wylio, W. Witt, C. Ingram, J. Parkhouse, L. Ledger, W. Hildreth, F. Ballinger (fire police), Messrs.-E. MeKenzie, A. Phelps, J. 11. Palmer, G. Redmond, W. Berry,-: IL W.* Lloyd, J. Martrvn (representing the Rotorua Fire Brigade), and' Superintendent Barnard,: of the- Palmerston North* Fire Brigade (representing the Napier Fire Brigades' Association). Senior Station Officer J. Garwood was the only one of those present who served under Captain Hugo while- he was-superintendent of tho Wellington Brigade. Mr. William Hildreth;.Karori, was the only original member-of the Wellington Fire ■ Police present. It was Captain Hugo .who'initiated that, corps .when'superintendent; of the Wellington Brigade. Mr. Hildreth and Captain J. Wright, of Plimmerton, are tha only original members :of :■ the polic* still living.
