CHALLENGE SHIELD
Many matters of interest' are contained in the latest "Bulletin" issued by the N.Z.H.A. _ In connection, with the Challenge Shield, ■ "The bulletin" states that at the' last meeting of the management committee of tho parent body, challenges wero received from Waikato and • Poverty Bay. ■ Auckland ■ wrote 1 suggesting July 8 as a suitable date for -the match with * Waikato, and this was approved subject to confirmation from Waikato. Waikato also entered a challenge on behalf of its. Waipa subassociation for the Nordon Cup.. Taranaki wrote asking that after the first Nordon Cup match at Hawera on July 5, subsequent games bo played weekly. It was explained that owing to there being Wednesday and Thursday halfholidays in different parts of tho province, matches would be played on the half-holiday observed by the town i.i which, th* game' was played. It ivas decided that the following be the order of matches: —Horowhenua, Dannevirke, Waipa. Advice was received from the New Zealand "Hockey Referees' Association that its interpretations board had prepared a report on Major Rickett's manual, and after careful consideration it was decided that the manual be approved as a "useful guide" for referees in New Zealand. • It was to be borne in mind, however,; that opinions expressed in the manual were not to be accepted as ■official interpretations. It was decided that the inter-Island match be played at Nelson this year provided that Nelson, assumed responsibility for the accommodation of visit-' ing players and referees, and provided that satisfactory nominations wcre^received. Subject- to their . acceptance, Mr. R, L, Thompson (Wanganui) was appointed selector for tho North Island, and _Ir. C.' S, Bellamy' (Christchurch) for the South' Island: It..was -hoped that this year 'all associations would send in nominations.'-for this' fixture.
