ART IN NEW ZEALAND
'■''-'The.-Juno number of "Art in New Zealand" may be said^ to. use tho -words of. its'own editorial pages, "to assert itself with seeming undiminished spirit in the faeo, of -unparalleled, economic perverseness arid stress"; and it is well that it iis enabled 'to Aft so. The article contributed by*, Francis A.' Shurrriek on the'^Canterbury Society of Arts! annual exhibition contains* i yod /or thought, andjhas, an. application to other, art exhibitions in the' Dominion. The, Auckland Society's annual' exhlbitioni is reviewed by A.' J. C. Fisher,* but there was no time to include notes on Wellington's, recent exhibition. Amongst the other literary contents aro "Con'sidefation of Certain Music of J. S. Bach", (by J. C. Beaglehole), "Ballads in /Wo0d" (by Edward C. Simpson), "Capriceio" (by lima M. Levy), "Plain Man and Poet" (by J. Malton Murray), "Thespian Memories" (continued, by H.7E. Nicholls), a London letter from Russell Reeve, ( and notes cm art exhibitions and the.theatre,,and reviews.
Two * coloured plates ore included in thi. issue, "Snow, Mt; Oxford" (by Rata Lovell-Smith) and "Maori, Girl" (by L. F. Fraser).* Tho black and white reproductions number' a dozen or so, and are particularly interesting since they embrace several .phases of-con-temporary art in New Zealand.' Taken all round, th& present number of "Art in New Zealand" shows no falling away from the standard sot by its predecessors, and; tliat standard has invariably been very high.
