FIRST FUR EXCHANGE

Tho first fur exchange in the world was inaugurated recently,- whep the Lord Mayor (Sir Percy Greenaway) opened tho London Pur Exchange at Beaver Hall, Garliek Hill, E.C., states the "Daily Telegraph." The ceremony was, witnessed by trade representatives from countries important in the fur trade. Mr. P. Ashley Cooper, governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, in whose headquarters' tho exchango is accommodated,' said that furs valued at £12,000,000 to £13,000,000 were handled annually in that building. The Lord Mayor, declaring tho exchange open, said they met in the house of the Hudson's Bay. Company, which had been in existence in the City of London for 262 years, and had contributed to making London the fur trade capital of tho world. "Nearly four years have now elapsed," said Sir Percy, "of a depression unparalleled in the history of modern commerce, and yot I understand that tho fur trade of London has shown such adaptability in meeting changing circumstances that tho position of our great city in the fur trade of the world is more important than ever. At this time, when the merchants of many great centres are dazed by repeated blows of fate, and fearful of what the future holds, you, the fur merchants of London, have demonstrated to the world that you arc prepared to handle business now and in tho future with tho same coin-age and skill as you have shown in the past."

The ftev. Brother P. X. Webster, who has been at St. Patrick's College, Goulbuni, New South Wales, arrived by the Makura today to take up duties at St. Kevin's College, Oamaru. . . •■ ' •
