COMMUNITY SERVICE

THE FIRE ENGINE

TRAFFIC FEES QUESTION

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

MASTERTON, This Day. The possibility of fire engines being subject to heavy traffic fees was mentioned at last night's meeting of the Masterton Fire Board.

Mr. W. A. Parton said it would be iniquitous ' to1 impose such a charge. Fire_ brigades rendered a community service, and it would be very unfair to tax the engines. Taken right through, fire engines used the roads to a comparatively small extent.

A fire engine was a public utility, observed Mr. Trevor Beetham. It'was neither.a business nor a pleasure car, and most people were glad to see it on the road.

Other members similarly criticised the proposal.
