Tip to the present the Government has held a more or less "watching brief" in connection with, the butter crisis,

and there is no indication yet that it will make any move until the dairy industry itself has reached a decision. It is understood, however, that the view held by prominent members of the Government is that it will,bo difficult to avoid some form of restriction if a further drop in the already disastrously low prices is ,to be avoided.

The leaders of the Government—the Prime Minister (the Bt. Zion. G. "W. Forbes) and the Minister of Finance (the Et. Hon. J. G. Coates-) —are both absent from Wellington, and it is therefore impossible to secure an expression of Government opinion on the latest information from London.
