INTERNATIONAL TRADE

A NEW CONCEPTION

Writing to the President of the N.Z. Importers' Federation, •■'■ under date March 1, the publisher of tho ."American Exporter," New York, says:—

"1 thank you very much for your valued letter of February 3, with enclosures which are very interesting. As you say, the position of the importer in New Zealand is not a very happy one at the moment, and unfortunately that applies to nearly every country in the world. ■, .

"However; we aro very happy here that with the acoession of Mr. Roosevelt to the Presidency, a lead will be given to a new conception of international trade throughout tho world. Our Congress recently refused to pass legislation against imports from depreciated currency countries, although the' pressure for them to do so was very great. The appointment of Senator Cordell Hull as Secretary of State is most 'important because he is a moderate tariff man of deep-seated principles and great ability. His influence in tho councils of tho world must bo very great. "You no doubt have hoard that a week ago Premier Bennett of Canada unexpectedly announced that he and his party, who have consistently fought reciprocity with tho "United States for many years have now changed their policy. I think this, is indicative of a general world-wide attitudo that each nation is ready to meet tho other halfway if someone will only take the. lead."
