MUSICAL EVENING
B.M.S. GROUP MEETS
A very enjoyable evening was given on Monday by the piano section of the music-making groups organised by the British Music Society. Eowls of blue hydrangeas formed the artistic decorations, and a delightful feeling of informality among members prevailed throughout the evening. A letter of greetings and good wishes to the group from Miss Valeric Corliss (hon. organiser of tho British Music Society) was read, this being the first of a series of monthly meetings arranged for 1933. A portion of the rules governing the music-making groups was also read for the benefit of new members.
The members were received by Miss Catherine Moncrieff, who later read an interesting paper dealing with British music from tho earliest recordings until the present day. Compositions of the following composers were heard illustrating the paper:—Byrde, Pureell, Lishop, John Field, Sterndale Bennett, John Ireland, Bridge, M. Herd, Elgar, J. L. McEwen, F. Swinstead York Bowen, Delius, Leo Livens, Dr. Hai<* and Tobias Matthay. Those performing were-Mrs. Wallis, Misses C. Moncrieff, L. Black; J. Porter, J. Maunder, G. Gaudin, E. Koacho, D. la Boche, and Mr. Dukes. Miss C. Young, a member or the bong Group, accompanied by Miss Hobbs, sang a very delightful group of English songs. After supper there was a discussion as to what form the next meeting should take, and- it was decided to have an evening of Russian music in April. As May is the centenary of Brahms, the piano group have elected to celebrate this event by devoting their third meeting to music of that composer. It was also announced that the next British Music Society concert would tako place at the end of April, the programme being arranged by tho committee of the Music-Making Groups.
